Cantec Services Hamilton: A Legacy of Excellence

From a small lockup near Frankton Saleyards to a state-of-the-art headquarters, Cantec Services Hamilton has grown into a trusted name in Waikato’s construction industry. With decades of experience, a dedicated team, and a commitment to quality, we continue to paint and waterproof the future—one project at a time.

Our History
From Small Beginnings to Industry Leaders
Cantec Services Ltd has been a trusted name in Waikato and the Bay of Plenty’s construction industry since expanding into Hamilton in 1989. Founded the year prior in Rotorua by Claude Lundeberg and Neil Waites, the company quickly grew despite the tough economic climate.

Starting from a small lockup near the Frankton Saleyards, Cantec’s reputation for high-quality painting and coatings fueled its expansion. The arrival of senior quantity surveyor Tony Keown in 1990 helped solidify its presence in Waikato’s construction sector —now employing 50 field staff and serving major clients like Fonterra, Wintec, and Waikato’s leading hospitals.

A New Era: The Hamilton Headquarters
In October, Cantec opened its purpose-built headquarters at the corner of Tahi Street and Norton Road—a significant upgrade from its former cramped premises. Designed by Nick Crossfield (Studio4architecture) and built by Hamilton-based Commercial Construction, the 1,300-square-metre facility is built for efficiency and future growth.

True to its roots, Cantec staff played an active role in the building’s construction, handling painting, coatings, and roofing to the highest standards. Even retired co-founder Neil Waites conducted a final inspection, ensuring every detail met expectations.

On October 30, the new headquarters was officially opened with a blessing from a local kaumātua, followed by a ribbon-cutting ceremony with David Bennett and 30-year team member Tony Keown. Staff and guests gathered to celebrate this major milestone.

A Team That Feels Like Family
Cantec prides itself on its dedicated team, with six employees serving over 20 years and 80% staying for more than a decade. Managing Director Brendon McLean, who started as a tradesman sweeping floors 30 years ago, has seen the company evolve from its early days to its modern success.

Looking Ahead
Cantec continues to take on large-scale projects, including Waikato Hospital’s emergency wing and the Rototuna North Summerset retirement village. With a strong team, a new headquarters, and a commitment to quality, Cantec Services is well-positioned for the future.
